Mazatlan anchorage

Picture of our anchorage in Mazatlan....middle island. Another sunny, warm day in the town that was "officially " founded in 1591 by Nuno de Guzman....not to mention the natives that had lived here in pre-Hispanic times.
We are off to Old Town in a few hours...before the heat and humidity become unbearable.

Lost my camera....water....lost pictures......bottom of the Ocean.....But this is Cap Cat with crew having a blast on the Ha Ha. Katie, John, Hailey, Wayne and Carol.....San Diego to Cabo with stops in between at Turtle Bay,
Santa Maria and finally, Cabo. Warm and sunny here ....88 degrees, water temp 81 and rising. Bob and Dorene are with us again for the trip to Mazatlan, Isla Isabela, Chacala, Punta Mita and La Cruz. More pictures to follow.....hopefully.

Bob is still smiling after spending 3 weeks with us and helping the Capt with greasy grimy messy boat projects~~~ Dorene is still smiling after spending 3 weeks with us and helping me cook, clean and keep our guys happy~~~~

Is it the wine? good company? they are on a Catamaran? maybe because they are not on their boat so they don't have to think about their bottom paint, inverters, rudder, pumps and rigging. Whatever it is, we were glad to have them aboard and are sad that they had to leave to go back home to work on their rentals. Good news is that they will be joining us again from Cabo to PV. I'm sure the Capt can find some more projects for Bob and Dorene and I can start cooking up exotic dishes again.

We took a walk up into the hills in search of Zane Grey's home and found this lovely view...Cap Cat is down there somewhere..we did find his house but it smelled like he was buried there...nice view though Of course there are the NO signs...we ignored them...

The Jazz festival was going on and we found this Jazzy pelican on one of the side streets...cool man!

Catalina and the Pirates

Stupid me forgot my camera....so all I have is these lame pictures...at night we saw all the crazy people dressed as Pirates. We made it till 9 pm and then headed back to the boat...you can only drink and say "RRRRRRRRRR" for so long. It was a beautiful 2 days~~ warm and sunny...are we in Mexico?

Horacio and Arriana our friends at Singlar, Guaymas, celebrate their birthdays with a bbq for everyone. That cake was delicious! It was then off across the Sea on our way to La Paz to meet up with our friends, Heather and Jim ,on Meerkat.
Wouldn't you know it...calm seas but the wind blowing from the South...just the direction we want to go for the next 5 days!
So what were the highlights of the 5 days...
almost bumping into several pods of HUGE whales
dolphins riding our motoring bows
marlin jumping out of the water several times right behind the boat
tons of flying fish
coolish water for swimming and snorkeling

I know most of you couldn't stand to wait so I put the pictures in reverse...new stairs getting wet backing down the ramp...it doesn't look steep but believe me it is...nothing is hitting or breaking

Doreen, my friend from Scottish Mist in San Carlos, came over and picked me up for a girls day of shopping. We had ice cream cones for lunch and then went shopping for clothes. I managed to find a dress, a pair of pants and a top. A miracle for me! So much more fun to go shopping with a woman. I probably would have ended up buying epoxy if I went with the Capt!

This was the 4th store we checked out...we didn't stay too long as the air conditioning was not working. Plus, we couldn't find a bull whip to go with the hats.

If you look closely you can see the Capt freaking out! What was that noise and why are we stuck 20 feet short of flat land? Simple answer is ....trailer broke. Luckily, we were about 20 feet out of the water and only listing about 15 degrees backwards...made for good blood supply to our brains when we slept. We stayed this way for 2 days and then with the trailer fixed we were moved up with the other boats. Phew!

We had to stop in Isla Isabella to have our boobie fix. This first guy looks almost ready to fly!

This year we noticed that many of the boobies were taking care of 2 babies...more food? Lots of extra blue foot polish? Who knows.

Baby frigate....only a mother could love this strange looking creature! We didn't see any nests with 2 frigate babies..guess there just isn't enough room.

We hung out here for 2 days, water was coolish not like Chacala some 90 miles south where it was 84 degrees!

Sure is fun to see our boat in action! These pictures were taken off of lectronic Latitude 38 web site. As you can see we were having fun. We managed to come in 1st place in the multi hull division. Some $30,000 pesos were raised for schools in the Bandaras Bay area. This is the kind of racing I like....put the spinnaker up and leave it up till the end of the race....none of this up and down stuff.

Last year when we pulled into La Cruz Marina we were one of about 15 boats. This time the marina was so full that they had to put us on the BIG dock with all the mega yachts. This slip was so big we could actually turn around in it! Later we moved over to the Cruiser friendly dock when our friends on Bravado left for the South Pacific. It is so much nicer being on a dock with our friends and actual people that will smile at you and yack it up. Seems all the mega boats do is clean their boats and watch tv.

When your Captain yells from below the boat , " hand me the hacksaw!", it can never be a good sign! After a beautiful sail from Paradise Marina to La Cruz we decided to drift along the coast towards Bucerias. Ten minutes we hear the CRUNCH of something under the boat. Next thing we knew, 1/4th of the port rudder is toast. Now we really have to be serious about hauling!

Our trip to Arroyo Verde

On Sunday, Lupe and Jr of Moon and Stars..boat is now for sale...invited the crew of Capricorn Cat (along with 20 other friends) to their Ranchito in Bucerias. The place is under construction but you could barely notice since the focal points of gardens and pool gave a feeling of finished work. Lupe is the designer, architect and grand master of the complex...what an amazing, fun loving, take charge and vivacious woman. You can't help but have fun around her and JR too. Moon and Stars...next to us in La Cruz Marina. It is hard to miss this boat!

They have decided to sell the boat, move into their new place and travel in their motorhome. Wonder if they need some viejos to join them ????

These photos will not show the true grandure of their new home and development but hopefully, you will use your imagination. Apparently, the first thing she built on the property was the pool, outdoor eating area and banos/showers. The pool is olympic size with a ramada in the middle.

Pool is always at 90 degrees...nice and comfortable so you can stay in all day!

Next thing she did was develop the many gardens so that by the time the house was built the place would be established and have a finished look. There are probably some 20 different garden area with walkways, sitting areas, lounging and eating places...Every where you look the eye is taken with a visual delight.

Gary and Lynn, our buddies from Brisbane, have been with us for the past week. They are great to have on the boat...they pitch in with boat chores, help the Capt with his list of never ending boat problems and Lynn helps with her creative cooking . They are easy guests to have on the boat as they go along with the "plan" that is always in flux.

Whales in the Bay

We have seen quite a few whales on our sails around the bay...some close to the boat and others off in the distance. Last night we were anchored off the Marina in La Cruz and we heard the whales "talking". Apparently they are in the anchorage! Hope they don't become tangled in the anchor lines of all the boats!

We decided to give Capricorn Cat a new look... stripes on the hulls give us a sleeker look . New stack pack and our name on the pack...now everyone can see us....hope that is a good thing!

New lazy jacks and a new lines all over the place..All this should make it easier to put the main sail up and take it down.

Road trip to San Sebastian

Wayne and I decided to take a road trip with our friends, Jim and Kent from Sea Level, up to the mountain town of San Sebastian. San Sebastian is about 1 1/2 hours out of Puerto Vallarta and is 5250 foot elevation. It was a silver and gold mining town built in the 1600's. Nice and cool .
We rented a jeep...never again...and took off...past the statue outside the local gym.. past the local prison...

past the constant falling landside...

over this modern bridge and into the town of San Sebastian.

Luckily for us the landslides did not create a road block and it was sunny without rain in sight.

The valleys and hillsides were full of agave, corn, strawberries, cattle grazing, small villages, and lush green trees. San Sebastian has a coffee plantation and grows the coffee on the hillsides under a pine tree canopy. We tasted the end result and found it very good...we even bought some to take home.

Restaurant Real Y Mina

Deciding on a restaurant wasn't very difficult as only 3 places were open...so we opted for Italian. The owners Walter and Coco were entertaining and talkative. We know all about their children, mothers, business and life in a small town. Both the food and wine were excellent... we give it 3 stars. After dinner Coco took us on a tour of the gardens and give us some of her prize lemons...yummy.

Hotel del Puente

Our Hotel...del Puente...turned out to be the best place in town for a variety of reasons. .. the best being the cost...$18 a nite for a huge room with private bath and shower. It was a former family house and dates from the early 1600's. The walls were about a foot thick, tile floors and comfortable beds. This is the view from our bedroom doorway. All the rooms looked out onto a beautiful courtyard. We checked out many of the other hotels...from the hostel, which smelled bad to the $130 a night places with breakfast. All in all we liked ours since it was in town , quiet and inexpensive.

The houses in town are made of adobe, painted white with red trim and have red tile roofs. The streets are narrow, made of cobblestones and the sidewalks are about 2 feet wide. (If there are any) And the whole town is built on a slope with a few small rivers winding through. While you really can't get lost it sorta feels like you are in a maze.

The view of La bufa (elev.8,400 feet) from town is quite impressive so since we had a jeep we decided to tackle the twisty winding roads. It took us hour and we never passed another car...praise the Lord!

We had to hike about 1/4 of a mile after we parked the car. You can just barely see the town between our heads. On a clear day they day you can see Bandaras Bay... this day it was too hazy. Looking over the edge reminded me of the top of Half Dome...a long way down!

Early moring coffe wait

San Sebastian does not believe in opening up any cafe earlier than 8:30am! We dressed in our warmest clothes and walked over to La Lupita's and Kent used her charm to snag us 4 cups of delicious coffee. Unfortunately, we had to leave before breakfast was ready ...places to go and very little time.

It is a good idea to sit in the sun to stay warm. . that mountain air can be chilly!

Last week we went shopping for clothes....W found this tux in a vintage clothing store and I found a dress on sale in Capitola. The shirt W is wearing is full of little mirrors...do you know how hard it was to find something to go with that shirt?? Oh, yeah, his bow tie also blinks red and green lights! We are ready to party!

Christmas in Boulder Creek

We had Christmas at Jenna and Shane's this year. The Bambino was all dressed up in his vest, white little man shirt and red pants!

Special gift .....our other "son", Steven, brought Jack down from the city and stayed for dinner. Steven is living in Santa Cruz now...if you need your motorcycle worked on, he is the guy. Certified Motorcycle mechanic and one heck of a nice guy. He likes to get into the Spirit of the Holidays.

The kids...so wonderful to have everyone together...wish it could be all the time.

A Tenderloin Christmas Hustler

We went to see this play last night with friends Tina, Ken, son Jack and Shawna. Jack and Shawna work with some of the actors at Ducca. As you can imagine from the playbill...the play (which is a musical) puts gleeful, raunchy spin on some familiar holiday themes. The theater only holds 45 people so we had perfect seats! We give it 4 stars to enlightened people. Very funny.

Well, I did and guess what..This crawl takes place all over the USA..people raising $ for local charities. In SF they sure were having fun!

A visit to San Francisco with #1son

Today I went up to SF to visit with Jack and his gal Shawna. They are such a cute couple. He is a chef at Ducca at the Westin on 3rd and Market St and Shawna is working there also as a server. She is a teacher by training and will hopefully, have a job in the fall at a school teaching history.
We went to the Castro theater to see Milk with Sean Penn. I remember the day that Harvey Milk and Mayor Moscone were killed by Dan White...remember the "twinkie " defense? Very good movie, I give it 4 stars.

He will hate this in about 10 years!

Jenna, Shane, Andrew, the Bambino and I went up to Crest Ranch in Bonny Doon to pick out the perfect tree....It was cold and windy so we made a quick decision and headed home for hot chocolate and some heat!

We all joined the Punta Mita Surf and Yacht club ...again. Here is Laura of Cap Cat and the new Commodore, Heather, giving her the paddle ...all in good fun. We each had to sport new facial hair, drink some kind of "special" brew, dance till 1 am and then be ready to surf the next morning. Oh, yeah, then we had to sail down to La Cruz ....somewhere in this crazy Bash there is sailing.

Laura and Eric took over cooking duties on Thanksgiving and made us what Eric calls the "Irish heart attack " breakfast. Sure was yummy!

You just gotta love these fuzzy babies. We saw every stage from egg to almost flying but thought these were the best...fluff balls. We have to find out when the feet turn blue, sure can't be from the water temp as it was about 82 degrees.

This boobie bird left Mazatlan with us...I think she had the hots for our Flamingo...and stayed put all night long. We guess he was going home for a traditional fish dinner on thanksgiving day.

We like this place in Mazatlan...fast and not too bad on the $. We had to haul to replace the zincs and fix a leak in a sail drive. No time to paint...we were on a schedule. So, 2 1/2 hours later we were on our way to Isla Isabela.

The Capt wanted to see what his hair would look like with waves. Laura decided to throw her wallet into the sea....then freak out and jump over board ....luckily it didn't sink...Mexican money is waterproof so "not a problem".

We met some friends of Blair and Joan...pervious owners of CC. They heard us on the radio asking questions and came by to tell us how much fun they had with this boat and the previous owners. Are we the only people who have not sailed with B & J?

They took us to a cool restaurant...with a view of the surfing area ! We didn't see any Brujas but lots of cruisers having the best breafast this side of Peters in Millbrae.

Lee and Lin...Lee is the wife. Wonderful people who are currently living in a condo at Marina Mazatlan while their boat dries out up in San Carlos Seca.

We must be turning into Mazatlanias...we don't leave the boat until dark, eat a late meal and arrive home at ...1 am....whoa....way past our bedtime!

Eric's Opera comment...."I want to get to know that cute gal in the orchestra playing the 1st violin"

Carol's comment...."Never eat a big meal before sitting in a stuffy room"

Actually, we had a great time even though we had to wear long pants (dress for me) and I had to keep an eye on the boys and remind them of their manners....no swearing!

The crew finds culture

Tonight we are going to see "El Barbero de Sevilla" at the Instituto Municipal de Cultura in the historical section of town. "Bout time we get some culture! The Opera will be in Italian with ..on a screen above the stage...a Spanish translation. Interesting!
We thought we remembered what the opera was all about but to be sure we went on line and watched UTube version with Woody Woodpecker. hmmmm.

After the "tour" we ended up in the historical section and had a sip of the bubbly. Eric looks like Santa so a bunch of teenagers came up to him and asked if they could speak to him in their limited English...part of a school homework assignment. Soon he had them laughting, especially when he tried to speak Spanish.

This little girl was sitting next to us at the table and we paid some crazy balloon guy to make a bunch of animal balloons for her. She went away a big sonrisa...smile :> )

Back in Mazatlan

Our trip to Mazatlan was easy and breezy. We are in the Singlar Marina...nice but it can't beat Guaymas Singlar. We hired a taxi and took a tour of the city. Mazatlan has lots of high peaks with wonderful views. This view is looking towards our Marina...behind Eric's head.

Pict on the top is one of the fountains along the Malecon. Very few tourists in town as the cruise ships had just left for PV.

Eric the Great

Eric the Great is our newest crew member. He came down on the Ha Ha with some friends and wanted to do a bit more traveling. We wanted to have extra crew to help with the night crossing from La Paz to Mazatlan and then down to Puerto Vallarta. The match was perfect...he laughs at our jokes, eats what ever I cook and can follow the Captain's orders.

Heather and Ruth came by to say Adios to us on our last day here in La Paz Marina. We will be leaving here Monday for Mazatlan and eventaully Puerto Vallarta. We all have been going to Yoga in the morning and playing at night. Wayne opened up the bottle of $33.00 wine he accidently bought ....might as well drink with with our friends! And that is Sonoma Cheese! so yummy!

We arrived in La Paz marina last Wed and who should be at the dock to help tie us up but our best buds...Heather and Jim from Meerkat. They have been helping boats tie up at the fuel dock for the past few weeks...currents and winds make it quite tricky . Sure was great to see their happy faces.

Heading south, we came across a pod of some 500 dolphins....naturally we had to change direction and cruise with them. They are so much fun to watch..we had some 15 to 20 stay with us for about 20 minutes and then in a FLASH they dove down and took off!

Unfortunately, the trailer up in Guaymas to haul Cap Cat was not going to be finsihed for another 2 weeks so we had to head South towards PV area so I could make my plane reservation by Dec 1st.
